I don't really mean to limit by association. The comparison is only that I think Trailfire is spiritual heir to the intent of ThirdVoice to allow user-generated annotation that attaches to a site. Third Voice went away for many reasons, including those you mentioned, but it's great to have a new system that not only carries on that basic intent, but goes far beyond what Third Voice ever did.
