Do you suppose that the good Stephen Jones of St. Edward's is is using "go off" in the sense of igniting? Explosions, fireworks "go off," not "on." Mayhaps he is thinking of a "flash bulb"? And if so, how old would one be today if one actually remembers using a flash bulb? Cube? Bar?
